The Siding Replacement Process — What to Expect in Richmond VA

New siding installation takes 3–7 days for a typical Richmond VA home. Here is a step-by-step overview of the replacement process.

If you have never had siding replaced, understanding the process helps you prepare your home and set realistic expectations for the project timeline. Here is what PA Painting does when replacing siding on a typical Richmond home.

Day 1 begins with protection setup and tear-off. We protect landscaping with tarps and begin removing the existing siding systematically, starting at one corner and working around the house. Old siding, nails, and debris are collected and disposed of properly. This phase also reveals any hidden moisture damage, rot, or insect damage that needs to be addressed before new siding goes on.

Once the old siding is removed, we inspect the sheathing — the structural layer behind the siding — for any damage. Any soft, rotted, or structurally compromised areas are repaired or replaced before proceeding. This step is critical for the long-term performance of the new siding.

A new house wrap or moisture barrier is installed over the sheathing. This water-resistive barrier is the critical defense layer between your home's structure and any water that gets behind the siding. We use quality products and tape all seams properly to ensure complete coverage.

New siding panels are installed from the bottom up, with each course overlapping the previous. Corner posts, J-channels, and trim boards are installed first to create the framework for the panels. We maintain proper expansion gaps for vinyl siding to allow for thermal movement — a common installation mistake that causes warping when skipped.
