Large drywall holes require more than spackling. Richmond VA drywall pros explain the professional repair process for holes of any size.
Large holes in drywall — anything bigger than a golf ball — require a different repair approach than small nail holes or hairline cracks. Here is the professional process for patching large holes so the repair is invisible once painted.
For holes between 2 and 6 inches, the California patch method works well. Cut a square piece of drywall slightly larger than the hole, score and snap the paper backing off two sides, insert the patch into the hole, and use the paper flanges to secure it with joint compound. Sand smooth after drying.
For holes larger than 6 inches, the proper approach is to cut back to the nearest studs on each side of the hole, install blocking or backing boards, cut a new piece of drywall to fit, and tape and finish the seams with three coats of joint compound — feathering each coat wider than the last to blend seamlessly.
Texture matching is often the hardest part of large drywall repairs. Orange peel, knockdown, and skip-trowel textures all require specific techniques and tools to replicate convincingly. We recommend testing the texture on a scrap piece of drywall before applying it to the wall to ensure a good match before committing.
At PA Painting & Construction, our drywall repair team handles repairs of all sizes in Richmond and Henrico County. We match textures, prime repaired areas properly, and can paint the entire wall after repair to ensure a perfectly uniform finished appearance. Call (804) 980-6499 for a free estimate.
