Texture matching is the hardest part of drywall repair. Professional painters in Richmond VA explain how to match orange peel, knockdown, and smooth finishes.
Texture matching is consistently cited as the hardest part of drywall repair — and for good reason. Richmond homes built in different decades have different texture styles, and matching the existing pattern precisely requires skill, practice, and the right tools.
Smooth finish — common in newer Richmond construction and renovated homes — requires the most patience. After patching and sanding, apply a thin skim coat of all-purpose joint compound, feathered out 8–10 inches beyond the repair. Sand with 120-grit then 220-grit paper, priming between passes. Done well, smooth repairs are invisible under both raking light and normal light.
Orange peel texture — the most common residential texture in Richmond — is created with a hopper gun loaded with thinned joint compound or texture spray. Practice the pattern on cardboard first to match the density and droplet size of the existing texture. Apply in light passes from about 18 inches away and allow to dry before checking the match.
Knockdown texture requires applying wet joint compound with a roller and then flattening the peaks with a drywall knife before it fully dries. The timing is critical — too wet and the peaks smear; too dry and they tear. Practice the technique on a scrap piece of drywall to get the feel before working on the repaired wall.
At PA Painting, texture matching is a core part of our drywall repair service. We carry multiple texture application tools and work to match existing patterns precisely. We always test the texture on a sample board next to the repair area before committing to the wall. The goal is a repair that disappears completely once painted.
